Job Summary

The Office of Physical Resources & Planning (OPRP) provides complete and integrated planning and design services, construction management, and building renewal, maintenance, and operations management to maintain the physical resources of the FAS campus.

The Senior Planner serves as a senior strategic partner to deans and administrative leadership across the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) responsible for assessing, developing, and implementing complex and comprehensive plans to maximize space utilization for academic and non-academic units in support of FAS's mission and strategic initiatives.
Position Description
 

  • Advises and partners with the faculty and administrative leadership of assigned areas/departments in setting the strategic goals, objectives, and plans for the highest and best use of facilities that support FAS's mission.
  • Accountable for program development in collaboration with faculty, researchers, department leadership, external consultants, and OPRP colleagues focused on future space needs, including, as may be appropriate, the development of new space opportunities, renovating existing space, and ensuring the effective use of current sites.
  • Lead processes to conduct feasibility and utilization studies, often in partnership with Senior Project Managers, with primary responsibility for program development, options assessment, and as liaison to future users. This includes but is not limited to documenting project/program requirements for new or changing programs and departments, preparing requests for proposals, participating in the designer selection process, overseeing stakeholder engagement and program confirmation, and ensuring program goals are addressed through all stages of design. Provide staff support and guidance to Client Committees for larger-scale studies and capital projects. Organize agendas, and oversee consultant work and interactions with stakeholders.
  • Partner with Senior Planner in charge of space information database to ensure information for assigned departments is updated on a regular basis for use by OPRP and for other University analysis and reporting.
  • Serve as the senior administrative contact for OPRP for answering inquiries, complaints, and/or resolving space problems for faculty, students, and staff across the assigned areas.
  • Collaborate with project managers and OPRP finance professionals in developing the multi-year capital plan, the annual capital budget, and project budgets.
  • Serve on cross-school or cross-University committees as the need arises.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in space planning and management at an institution of higher education or professional school.
  • Higher education experience working directly with faculty in program design and assessment for capital projects. The position requires familiarity with space utilization standards and the ability to assess the effectiveness of existing and proposed space configurations and adjacencies to support academic and administrative program goals.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
 

  • The position demands excellent organizational and project management skills, as well as the ability to work independently and attend to multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must demonstrate ability to handle sensitive information with discretion, work collaboratively and creatively with a wide range of people, present information clearly in oral and written form, and build consensus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a problem-solving orientation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite; familiarity with Centerstone or other space management database system, and facility with graphic design software helpful.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in an office setting along with walking and examining various campus spaces.
Working Conditions
This position will be based in Cambridge, MA.
